WOMEN'S SELF DEFENSE

Join us to connect with other ladies and teen girls in an environment that encourages authentic community, safety, and a fun and collaborative experience. With Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the focus is on setting boundaries and learning how a smaller person can effectively thwart an attack from a bigger, stronger opponent using leverage, technique, and timing rather than strength, speed, and athleticism. In the last 3 years, we’ve had 270+ women join us on the mats. These classes are for everyone!

Who teaches the classes?

Kiara Howerzyl, a certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu self-defense instructor, teaches key principles and self-defense techniques from the Women Empowered program through Gracie University.

Rob Hedrick, a Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Brown belt, assists Kiara during classes.

Who is the class for?

This program is for women of all ages. (Ages 12+)
All fitness levels are welcome. We make accommodations for injuries or other limitations. If you’re unsure, please come observe a class. Bring a friend!

When are classes?

Saturdays 10 - 11:15 AM (usually every other week)
Please plan to arrive 10+ minutes early, especially if it’s your first class.

How much does it cost?

It's FREE! We’re just happy to have you join us.

Where are classes held?

Roosevelt Community Church
924 N. 1st Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004
(1st Street & Roosevelt)

Is there parking available?

Free parking provided in our lot when available. If our lot is full, you’ll find inexpensive street parking and other paid lots nearby.

What happens if I miss a class?

No worries! Every class stands alone, and no experience is necessary to participate in any class. Think of each class as a stand-alone seminar. The content is unique each time we meet, and the more classes you attend, the more you learn. We have new students join us every time we meet. No RSVP necessary, just show up and have fun with us!

What should I wear?

Yoga pants or joggers and a t-shirt prevent knees and shoulders from rubbing on the mats, but you’re welcome to wear whatever is comfortable for you. We recommend slip-on shoes because we are barefoot on the mats, but we wear shoes on the wood floors and in the restroom.

What if I'm not comfortable doing the moves?

Your comfort is very important to us. If you decide you’d rather watch and not actively practice a technique, I’m happy to step in and help your partner practice the move a few times. You will never be pressured to go beyond your comfort level. The person practicing the move is always the one who determines the level of resistance given. This is an important part of our class culture, and something we talk about often.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! If your friends would like to receive emails or text reminders before class, please send me their information or have them reach out to me directly. Otherwise, please share this Google Doc with them so they have the most up-to-date information and bring them along on a Saturday morning. We look forward to having them join us.

Can I still come if I'm not a member of RCC?

The majority of the women and teens who come to our classes are not connected to our church in any way, but if you would like to come on a Sunday morning, we’d love to have you join us! Sunday service starts at 10am, and all are welcome. Please be sure to say hi and let us know you’ve been to a Saturday morning class and decided to visit!
